ATHENS: Car registrations in recession-hit Greece dropped 37.1 percent in 2010, state statistics showed Friday as millions of motorists faced rising fuel prices and taxes.

The Greek state statistics authority (Esye) said around 153,000 new and used cars were registered last year compared to more than 244,000 in 2009.

The federation of car importers and dealers said the Greek car market has declined to 1990 levels and that the economic crisis has cost 15,000 jobs in the sector over two years, the semi-state Athens News Agency reported.

Enforcing a tough austerity plan after the country nearly went bankrupt last year, the Greek government has repeatedly increased taxes and fuel levies to raise funds and to encourage Greece's die-hard drivers to use public transport. – A.F.P.
